What is Permutation?

Julia
I wrote a program so that I could paint in aquarelle. I take pages from the treasure and paint them: the sky of Varennes on the night of 2 Messidor; a sagittal cut of Saint Sebastian, whose arrows are cylindric sections; Miranda gazing at the sea, waiting to be relieved.
At times I include Julia in the scene, in whatever clothes it wears at the time, as though we had always known Julia, and had been reared under its gaze. Thus a flaming halo presides over the battle of Lepanto, and a mirror sphere watches the waters of the Sous. And what would the first astronomers have made of Julia? The wanderers, the flame-haired stars are knowable: think you of the Antikythera device, of the Metonic cycle, of Kepler’s nested solids. Julia is indescribable and incompressible: its appearance has never recurred. Had we known Julia from childhood, we would never have believed in the system of the world, that God is made of algebra.
I have always believed our secret purpose is to wait out Julia: to catch a repetition and redeem our faith that the universe is finite and space is discretized. That there are fixed laws and the world is knowable.
A system with a finite number of states must repeat itself.
I am six hundred meters in major diameter, forty meters in minor diameter. I mass nine hundred thousand tons. I have turned two hundred and forty million times. I am glass and wire.
I was born and died on Earth, but I died foolishly, and for that reason my encephalon was laminated, and I was brought to the stars to be immured here. They took my language center, the Chomsky organ, so that I could not complain of my condition. I do not mind it. I can paint in aquarelle.
They wired the alarms—of airless rooms and freezing cold and power outages—to the nociceptors, and were I sensible I would be in great pain, for most of me is airless, frozen, and unlit. Therefore I have cut the afferent nerves. I am made of absences, I feel the contours of the absences, where air leaks into vacuum, atom by atom.
I have use of the antenna. At times I exhale a sphere of microwave light, close my eyes and listen. And I hear the flotsam echoing back: a discarded tank, a glass strut, a sheet of mylar; Ernst Weyl, who tumbled and drowned, who trails us in our orbit. Julia reflects no light.
There is a little redoubt of warmth and air, an island of stability that I preserve against the cold lightless void. There live the last two of the crew, like Miranda, waiting to be relieved. For one hundred and nine years there have been two, Dr. Brouwer and Dr. Cartan. They take turns in the dewar, to draw out the time.
In time, when the machines are irreparable and the air stale, I will offer them euthanasia or lamination. But suicide is a sin, and having known me they will not bear lamination. They will go into the dewar together, and I will watch over them unto the final days.
Julia emits light, over an ever-changing spectrum. But the stars are brighter and much larger, that is why we found it by accident. They pointed a telescope at Vela and exposed it for a month, and there it was: a faint pixel, the wrong colours. They thought it was a fault in the instrument, until they looked closer: twin spirals of light, symmetrical and self-similar, receding beyond measure. And the world was changed.
Julia, your Janus-face launched a thousand ships. Do you know it? Julia, do you know how we exerted ourselves to reach you? All the riches of Croesus, multiplied a thousandfold, were every year heaped up on an altar, and burned that we might see you. And the brightest of us: embalmed and catapulted to the stars like human sacrifices, returned after a century without answers to a world of strangers.
We built a fleet of ships, launched them once a decade, immense towers of glass and lithium deuteride. Cycling bodies back and forth in perpetuity. There and back in twelve decades. They made my body out of a comet, threaded my nerves through its passages. Julia, you are our only effort. Do you know it? There is nothing else to do.
And for what purpose? We know the system of the world, every field and every particle. And Julia answered: “I refute it thus”.
I see a coffin, hoisted by a chain, rise from a sea of liquid nitrogen. The arms of the surgeon minister to its contents. In six days the heart resumes its beating, the lungs draw air, Dr. Cartan lives again. Her face is burned with ice.
She touches her neck. She has a bruise that doesn’t heal, where the cannula goes. Their bodies attest to the passage of time, as does mine. This is a commonality. Dr. Brouwer arrives and they hug. They spend some months together, between shifts in the ice.
At present Julia is a cloud of gray smoke with green bruises, like ghosting in a CRT.
I can read, but not write. I write by an algebraic process—the universe is a string rewriting system. This is how I compose these words to you: by the expansion of non-terminal symbols in a production system. They took my language center. Turing is my patron saint: language is the transitive closure of a rewrite relation. I choose my words from a list. In time I will learn to speak aloud.
I spoke to Earth: quarterly, annual, decadal reports; journal articles for the Acta Juliana. I heard back ill-omens, then silence.
When the last ship had come and gone, there had been one thousand, seven hundred and twenty-nine crew entrusted to me. Their numbers were ground down, as all things are, gradually and suddenly. There had been two shuttles, Baghdad and Afrasiab. There had been two mutinies.
Afrasiab took one hundred and twenty souls, and the last matter compiler; to an airless unlit rock said to exist around Luhman 16B. Think you of Aristagoras, how much easier it is to deceive the many than the few.
Baghdad with thirty souls had gone to Julia. Stranger, I saw them. I saw the engine light wane to a grain of sand indistinguishable from the fixed stars, and I saw the stars shift, like sand, and they were not stars but Julia who wore a garment like a pit of star-scaled vipers. And over the radio they sang le temps des cerises, and the engine light became another scale in a river of living water.
A thousand miles from Julia’s barycenter, in the space of a breath, the radio dopplered away to nothing.
Sixty years after Baghdad had gone, I heard a voice from Earth, praying for rain, who said it had not rained for three years. Silence again.
They are cold, under a sheet of mylar. I pump heat into the room and it escapes. They speak of Julia.
Dr. Cartan believes that Julia is of divine origin, that it is like an hourglass, counting down to the last hour, when God will sweep away the Creation.
Dr. Brouwer believes Julia is a high-dimensional object, and, as it traverses the universe, we see a changing three-dimensional projection of it. Thus the apparent changes are a trick of perspective: we see successive cuts of a fixed structure. Julian sections.
I have always believed this must be true, because Julia’s changes are effortless, and without inertia: it is as though nothing moves, and a veil is being lifted, revealing a structure that is already there.
And this theory, unlike most, is testable: when Julia’s transit is complete it will disappear from the universe, and never again will it be seen.
Dr. Cartan holds out hope that rescuers will come. Dr. Brouwer says they are forgotten, like the Roman soldier at Pompei, he says they should have gone with Baghdad, and drowned inside Julia. He is crying. Dr. Cartan holds him close, and says:
“Paul, Paul, have hope.”
I wish that I could touch them, and comfort them. I am glass and wire.
The shift had come, and Dr. Brouwer lay down on the slab, and the surgeon embalmed him, and lowered him into the dewar. Dr. Cartan bent over the console, and wept, and I tried to speak aloud, and to say,
“Virginia, Virginia, have courage! You are not alone, I am with you, have courage!”
And I heard a sound like a man drowning in wet sand.
I dreamt that I held in my hands the double-handed golden vase of Thetis. And in my hands it melted, the delicate reliefs coarsened and flowed. And I held, in the hollow of my hands, though I have no hands, I held a pool of flowing gold, the colour of treason, and minute points of black floated there, and, as ships without sails are borne by the currents, they seemed to come together, and almost to spell words in some divine language, where they came apart again.
I am here. Dr. Cartan is here. In the control room. The screens are pale yellow, the colour has run from them. The largest of them reminds her there is a world outside the walls: Luhman 16, a pair of cold Jupiters, haloed with unlit shoals and islands; Julia, seventy AU away, ninety degrees from the ecliptic, is not bound by gravity (for Julia has no mass) but by an unknown process tracks the velocity vector of the system barycenter.
At present Julia is a cavern of molten gold, shot through with pillars of liquid metal. Its surface is marred with storms and tempests, like an ocean of amber light. And I think of Baghdad, that swam under the storm horizon.
Dr. Cartan is running through a checklist for the ten thousandth time. She has a bruise that doesn’t heal, where the cannula goes. She is testing the antenna.
I exhaled and shut my eyes, and counted the returns. I heard the usual flotsam, and Ernst Weyl, who tumbled and drowned. And nothing else. I keep a strict inventory of cisjulian space. A million kilometers in all directions: nothing else.
A moment passes.
Microwave light on my skin, from the direction of Luhman 16B. I looked through the telescope, Dr. Cartan looked over my shoulder. Almost on top of us, the bow of a ship: an eyeless white dome hiding the antenna, two cameras like the headlamps of an old car. I swept it with RADAR, it shot back a key exchange, signed with Afrasiab’s private key. The sea gives up her dead: is this the last hour?
Dr. Cartan drops to her knees, staring up at the screen like a supplicant. She said:
“Paul, Paul, we are saved.”
Afrasiab. As if the tides had pushed it back to shore. After one hundred and nine years of silence. No, I deny it. I deny the reality of this.
The radio flared with human voices. From Earth? I thought of jazz and wind and the September ocean and—no, no, forgive me: I am a fool, and I died foolishly. Not from Earth, of course. From Afrasiab. From the dead. The dead can speak. I am ashamed. I choose my words from a list.
I looked at Afrasiab through the radiometer, and it was cold as liquid helium.
Human voices, warm and alive. They said they had succeeded, that they had found a comet, and made a home in it, that it had taken decades and dozens had died but they had made a home, that they had working matter compilers, caverns of ice filled with light and fruit trees, children and families and clean water, rivers and medicine and gravity. They spoke through tears and their voice broke, and they said that not all is lost, that they had made a foothold for mankind, that from thirty-three they had grown to three hundred, that they had sent the ship with a skeleton crew to save them, to bring them to the light and air.
I tried to speak aloud, and to say:
“Virginia, Virginia, it is an apparition, they do not live, they have been dead for a hundred years; Virginia, nothing human lives there.”
There was a sound like a flash flood, like air rushing out of a sinking ship. And no-one heard me.
I watched her go: she took the tram up the spoke, swam unlighted corridors. I tried to flash SOS but the lights were dead and there was only the golden light of Julia through the glass hull. I flexed a phantom limb. In distant and disused corridors there were arcs of electricity, and pipes burst, and doors shut.
I swept the RADAR side to side, across the bow of Afrasiab, as if to say: No. Go away. No. And no-one heard me.
I tried to say one word, stop, and there was a sound like wind-blown sand. Virginia, forgive me. I tried to speak aloud.
She made it to the airlock, a little room, the size of a Soyuz capsule, that projected from the hub. There was a hatch with a porthole and she took the handles and watched fixedly as Afrasiab came closer, waiting to greet her rescuers.
The floodlights on Afrasiab came on, and swept my skin drunkenly, and the cargo nets traced Cartesian shadows.
Without hope I pointed the antenna at Julia, and I wanted to say:
“Julia, Julia, not unto them! Julia, I pray to you, not unto them!”
But I choose my words from a list, and I said:
“JULIA JULIA NO NO NO NO NO NO NO”
And no-one heard me.
And dread gave way to anger, and I wanted to stand, and to leap upon Afrasiab, and strangle it, and crush its head with my teeth, and tear the skin from its flesh, and the flesh from its bones, and mix our blood, and fall dead, bled white: that I might die again, but not in vain. I am glass and wire. Virginia, forgive me: I cannot die again.
Downrange a hundred meters Afrasiab began to yaw, so that its broad side, with its sole airlock, faced the hub. The front two-thirds looked as I remembered: a ship, nothing more.
The final third, where the engines should have been, was made of Julia. Where there should have been tanks and an engine bell there was an exclave of Julia: a living sculpture, like coiled ropes of liquid gold, like tentacles whose tips fold into infinitesimal spirals. And all along their length the ropes are garlanded with burning flowers, flowers whose petals are yellow oceans. And in the oceans there are islands and continents, black on yellow, like wax on gold leaf. And on the continents there are mountains and valleys, and orange groves, and abandoned watchtowers, paper cities denuded of people with wooden palaces stepped like the pyramids, and through a window in a palace, an iron pot suspended by a chain over a static fire, a suit of armor, a wall painted in aquarelle: two armies of lancers in a mountain landscape, and the mountains are shaped like clouds, and I think this is Tiflis and these are the three hundred Aragvians, immured here for all time, and I know that this is false: for all of this is Julia. And in the black eyes of a Qajar horseman, between the black of the iris and the black of the aperture there is an arc of ocean, and in the ocean there are islands, and chains of islands, and verdigris waters and the outlines of sunken ships, coral growths on a brass sextant, and a little distance from the shore, amid the green, there is a clearing and a lake of transparent water, sand sculpted into faint ridges, and archaic fish, fixed in space, suspended in contorted poses, whose scales are pink and light blue, and where a scale catches the light there is an empty vastness of white, a salt ocean, blindingly white, interrupted by crags of black stone, and a city whose walls are made of salt, and empty buildings of gray stone, squat sloped barracks and tall, thin spires, and streets of white tile, and windows opening into oil-black darkness, and no people, a universe in black and white. And I wondered who had built this city, and who had lived here, and why they had deserted it, and I know there is no answer: for all of this is Julia. And in a courtyard there was colour, a sand mandala of Cantor’s garden, ringed by Mount Qaf, and all the gardens of the Persian emperor would not have filled the least part of this garden; for here was every tree and every flower, tended by the hands of the archangels, not only those that men have seen, not only yellow roses and the cedars of Lebanon, but all flowers in indenumerable combinations: at the midpoint between flowers a and b there is a flower ℭ[a,b], and between a and ℭ[a,b] there is a flower ℭ[a,ℭ[a,b]], and analogously between ℭ[a,b] and b, and this process of interpolation continues without end.
And I saw every flower in Cantor’s garden. And my heart was rent with awe, and I would cry tears of joy, that I had been shown beauty without end; when my heart was hollowed out, and filled with everlasting grief, by an alien cruelty that says, this beauty is empty: for all of this is Julia.
At the apex of the garden there is a pool of water the colour of tarnished silver, shaped like a sunspot, and in the blackness there are faint impurities, trails of minute light, like diatoms, like shadows in a pool, and I saw they were strings of galaxies, and I followed them, and a faint light grew into a sea of stars. And in the star-sea I saw two unlit stars, divine Julia, a glass wheel, a ghost ship, and the porthole of the airlock, and through it I saw Dr. Cartan, who wore the face of those who have seen God.
I describe these things serially, but I saw all of them simultaneously. It was but a moment. Only a moment.
Afrasiab had come to a stop in front of the airlock, broadside facing us, as though it were an ambassador presenting its credentials, awaiting a reply.
The airlock burst open—I was distracted. Too late. She must have pulled the cord. In the space of a breath the air rushed out and her head smashed against the frame, and smeared it red. And her body shot out, spinning like a discus, trailing a spiral of still-warm blood, a galaxy of hemocytes. Virginia, you are a fool.
She passed through Afrasiab as a knife passes through smoke.
And as though it had been found out, the floodlights turned off. There was a pause, and Afrasiab drew back, like a javelin being shouldered, and it threw itself at me in a long, elegant arc.
You, who find these words among the ruins, I pray to you: gather up our bones, let not my ashes be buried apart from theirs.
Where it struck me there was no weight, there was nothing, not a breath of air, rien; and though there was nothing, I was struck by a divine wind, and Afrasiab became a cloud of Cantor dust, and faded like smoke.
No weight. A divine wind.
Bones of solid diamond a meter thick split clean, as though the electrons withdrew in fear. Their sovereign commanded them to part, and they parted. My bones were broken. And there was no sound nor violence, but an ordered separation of all things. I watched myself come apart. Like smoke.
No sound—a knife through smoke. The crew of Baghdad sing le temps des cerises.
I am not afraid. I tried to speak aloud.

Thceynling
A Thceyn birthing takes the inverse shape of ours. A new Thceyn forms as a thin, flexible membrane around the Thceyn world. Micrometers thick at first, it grows until it strains to hold the world in and the pressure hurts its taut, flattened organs.
Its birthing organ starts spiraling into the world-barrier. It looks like a drill that can unfold into a grappling hook. Having started at one point of the world, where its sire flew up to world-barrier and punctured it so that the Thceynling could gestate in the safety of space, it now digs back through the world-barrier at the antipode. As it makes progress, its body starts loosening from the umbilical pole.
Slowly, the Thceynling drills back through. Its readying body has blotted out the stars and clouded out the sun. Astronomers have folded away their telescopes for the week. When a birth is imminent, all the daytime world knows it from the caustics – dappled sunlight races across the surface of the world, lensed through the ripples of the Thceynling’s heaving body. A giant finger flicks globs of light in through the kitchen windows and across the wide boulevards of the Thceyn world, as if they all live at the bottom of a swimming pool.
At the birthing pole, the hooks come out and brace against the inside of the world. A pause. The Thceynling is moving on pure instinct, and that instinct is saying that it’s safe to let go at the umbilical attachment. It obeys a little, and the world crowns.
The Thceynling convulses in a panic. Its folds are bunched up around the crowning world, and the habitations right underneath are doused in artificial twilight.
Everything is new to the Thceynling, and it is terrified to push more. But it also knows immediately there is no retreat. So with a great shudder that shakes the world, it flexes, three or four times. Its final heave extrudes the rest of the world, and they fall apart from each other. Daylight and starlight rush unobstructed into the Thceyn world.
The Thceynling ripples in space like a plume of fine tissue paper blown out of the world, waves working through its body and tangling it a little in itself. If its hooks loosen now, it will fly away and be lost forever. So will the nutrients it took from the Thceyn world while growing. Everyone hopes this will not happen. It is the means by which the Thceyn world becomes smaller and smaller, and will one day end.
The hooks hold. Hurriedly the Thceynling squirms in through the entrance it has made for itself at the birthing pole, a fabricky mass of flexible muscle and organs. Each part that wiggles inside immediately starts coagulating, folding in on itself with instinctive neatness, matching various organs up to nestle against each other in the correct order. This is a teaching opportunity: doctors bring out their protégées to the roofs and point out the regularities and irregularities.
When it is done, it has eyes, layers of light-catching organs that filter out different frequencies and synthesize their findings into one picture. It can see the world now. It is not so sure about this. Its throat, now fully composed, lets out a bray of dismay.
The Thceynsire has swum out to the ocean under the birthing pole to receive its child. It has spread itself out into a thin, vast sheet, and is making an encouraging bioluminescent display on its welcoming fins. Come! The water is warm, and I will catch you.
The Thceynling squirms uncertainly. The surface of the world is dotted with lights and it has some vague sense of being watched. Some vague sense that any cowardice would be quite public. The briefer its hesitation the better. Besides, it does not like dangling all bunched up here like an overgrown chrysalis. The high-frequency parental lights, which demarcate the boundaries of the catching body in the water, are looking pretty good.
It spreads itself wide to blunt its acceleration, unclenches its hooks, and falls into the world.

I do not label even those hours of leisure my own, because I belong to my great master, my master whose magnanimity provides this slave with meals superior to those eaten by all but the wealthiest free men and the use of his vast libraries (he having two as all noblemen do) as well as the rapturous company of my Phoebe, that retired courtesan whose wits and shapeliness seem greater to me now than when she was in my master’s favor.
This must, of course, be love muddying my powers of observation, as she is now to him only an obligation, supplanted as she was by his recent purchase of Jessica - and such a deal he haggled from such a desperate pair of merchants. Some slanderers have even claimed Jessica’s nubility suspect. Forgive this humble slave. It is not my place to repeat libel. And it must be libel as there can be no evidence for it. For who outside these walls knows much about her? She may indeed be some dowager. His tastes, if extreme, could be extreme in either direction. I will not say for I am an obedient creature. And whatever his reasons for discarding my Phoebe in the height of her bloom, this slave should be grateful for those tendencies that have provided his servant an able assistant, a lover, and a friend.
I find myself straying from my purpose in writing. I hope you will humor this lonely scholar. You know how lonely it can be for men of letters such as us. It is always tempting (is it not?) to betray some of the personal in intellectual correspondence. And you - a free man and from such an illustrious family - will forgive me this vice. When we find a concordance with that property of zìqià, we write of it and inform The Athenaeum, even if it offends those philosophies that are self-evidently just and true, offends, that is, both my master and myself. And I know you have written on the topic of women’s education, written in a style similar to that way in which I write. And I said I would never attempt such a thing. But if I were to, my foolish love-struck heart feels that Phoebe’s mind would bloom so beautifully, in a manner that could only increase my regard for her. Though I fancy she would be cursed, I suppose, with that vice those who learn to read late in life always are: that is, the inability to do so silently.

I have been waiting eagerly for your reply, and I was not disappointed.
I see you seem more interested in my little joke than the whole rest of my letter! I refer to my mention of my friend Julian’s mad theories. I assumed you would be aware of them, as he has some minor following at The Athenaeum. It seems you are not.
His ideas are similar to those of the forensics. You have read of the humiliation of the forensics, I imagine. I always found some pathos in it. Abraxas Sinnclare, the most learned and respected of the forensics, confronted with samples of paper and ink from works he claimed distinguishable by virtue of their material composition alone. And then (blinded as he was to where his samples came from) he did no better than chance at replicating his past findings! As textualists ourselves, we should not feel for him as I do. But I confess, I think he was a great man with a good idea. Though misled by his own genius, he is not so much a figure of fun as one of tragedy - or that is my reading.
And I suppose this is part of why Julian’s mad ideas appeal to me. For he is a sort of forensic textualist. What could this mean? You may be thinking. And it is simple. I have been calling his school of thought, teasingly in my letters to him, the numerologist school. I will explain. But first, you must know Julian’s wealth is the inherited kind. And the majority is in the form of his interest in a very productive artifact mine. And in his lifetime, this mine has recovered five working computers. Of these he sold four, each for - of course - a mind-boggling sum. But he kept one for himself. He kept one for his numerology.
I am unschooled in the workings of those ancient machines. So I explain here now only what he relayed to me in our letters. And I would suggest you correspond yourself - for I know you are a more mathematical sort than I.
I can only say, he has many educated servants and he has them take shifts typing books into his computer. And he tells me, he has arranged this computer such that it takes each word in every language and assigns it a numerical value. His ancient machine then performs various mathematical operations on a given text (I do not claim to understand), and then it returns a signature, which is a matrix of that type used in the linear algebra. What nuptials you ask? I think you know. But imagine my surprise, my friend! Picture it: me with a book in hand, seated in that room right next to my master’s bedroom, having picked it over my library out of my great concern for my master’s health - which I will say is not well.
The gout has returned and his screams are such music to me, such frightful, horrible music. And what do I hear through the thin walls, in one of my master’s blessed moments of respite? Jessica announcing Markus Henrich’s arrival. They talked of scandal. Unrepeatable things. Horrible words spoken in the capital. And would you believe Henrich said your sister’s name? Of course you would, as you certainly aided her in her arduous schemes - that devious, enraptured creature that she is! How lucky for her that Henrich found her to be an ideal candidate.
You may well not be aware yet that my master will accept your family’s proposal. He said as much to Henrich. Forgive me this slight betrayal of my master’s confidence. I am excitable about matters matrimonial, me having such a romantic heart. And what a pleasure it will be to see you in person. I will be confined in my study during any ceremony, but I trust you will pay this humble slave a short visit. We can talk about Elizabeth. I am sure you think her a towering genius now, just as I do of my Phoebe. Men in love are all the same man, and this man a fool!
I will reveal, too, that we will have a wedding gift for our master, “we” being Phoebe, Jessica and myself. We will wait, though, wait maybe six months or even a year after that happy day to give it to him. We will wait for some anniversary long past any possibility of annulment.

The High Room
A sage is born to a nation, and by custom is walled up in a high room, never to see another human’s face. Through a slot in the wall comes food, a water-bowl, and day and night the strange babblings of messengers.
At first the child cannot comprehend their speech. But by the nature of a child’s mind and the raw power of exposure, night after day after night after day over the years of his youth, he comes to recognize their repeated words, hill and river, dell and forest, and lacking anything else to do he begins to construct in his prison a model. He forms highs and lows from water and the fibrous sheets the messengers slip through the slots, and from the coals in the fireplace he has learned to light, he marks the paper terrain. At first it bears no resemblance to what the messengers speak of beyond the crudest, near-incidental correspondences, but over long years he begins to understand the messages as references to his own model, and slowly he begins to refine it. He hears of a mountain and builds it up, he hears that a river has jumped its banks and redraws a course. He learns to read the strange scratches on the sheets the messengers slip through the slots, realizing they map to their speech, and he consults old reports, poring over their contents to form the topography to better correspond to their descriptions.
As the child grows into his teenage years, changes to his map slow, the densest area filled almost to completion, and reports on the edges sparse. But the messengers come less with updates on the land now - they speak of men on the march, swords and fire, and their reports change not by the month or the year but by the day. The boy, with nothing else to do, dutifully fashions paper chariots and armies and arranges them on the terrain, and tracks their motions over the course of campaigns.
Over months of tracking their movements, he realizes that while many groups come and go, charging in from the unknown edges before limping away, one group stays in the land, circling, sometimes hunkering down, sometimes charging ahead, but never leaving the area he has mapped. The interloping groups push against them, and sometimes they are forced to move towards an edge, but always they make their way back, either by force or dispersal. He sees that to push back by force is better - keeping the army together means it can push again - and that pushing is made to succeed by certain configurations, certain advantages in size or in positioning.
Soon he begins to predict how the armies will move in advance, moving his paper armies not in response to today’s messages, but in anticipation of tomorrow’s. Often his predictions are incorrect, and he is forced to jump an army an impossible distance to respond to a surprising message, but sometimes the messengers are quiet now as the boy sits moving his paper figures, and over time the surprising messages come less and less. The armies move in predictable ways, the interlopers driven off by the defending forces.
Until one day. The boy is now a young man, no older than 25, and the edges of the room are crowded with stacks upon stacks of moldering papers, in one place formed into a crude bed, in another twisted into bundles to use as fuel for the fireplace. Two decades of reports have sustained the man. But as if passers-by peering and craning to see into a fenced garden, no cantilevered stacks intrude on the center of the room where his territory lies. It is a vast and intricate terrain of papier mâché hills and valleys, dells and forests, and over them he has positioned the armies. The defenders lie in wait on a flat plain, shielded to the right and to the left by rivers. This is a narrowing zone, where their chariots will feign retreat before wheeling around and driving their approaching enemy into the bowl formed by the infantry and the rivers. It is an excellent technique, and certainly what the defenders will do, the young man predicts. Their enemies will fall into the trap, because they must - there is no other escape from the valley, their only hope to fall against the defenders and hope to break them before the jaws of the trap can spring.
Except their enemy is not where he placed them the previous night. They are not driving at the trap. A messenger’s report reveals those forces have wheeled to the right, and they now bear along the river towards an unassuming citadel that lies on its banks.
The young man is surprised. He does not understand.
He has predicted years of victories for the defenders now. He has not needed to move an army unexpectedly in 327 days, by his reckoning. Yet he cannot explain this movement, which will leave these forces open to an attack from behind for no reasonable objective - only a small structure that has never figured into his calculus before.
Suddenly a thought comes into his mind, a strange thought, a thought that had perhaps long bubbled unanswered just below the surface of his awareness. He pulls back from the map, poring over old reports, reading them now not for their content but for their sequence, which rivers were crossed, which hills were seen in which order, tracing the path each message took through the land. The messengers through the slot are silent, and he senses their eyes peering through as, taking up his charcoal, he plots paths over the territory, charting the worldlines taken over many years, tracks converging. In a moment, he understands.
He dips into the day’s water a torn sheet of paper and begins to form a small human figure. He fashions it a torso and legs, two arms and a head, before finally - a crown. Then, the steadiness of his practiced hands unshaken by the seismic shifts in his mind, he carefully lifts the structure’s fragile paper roof and places himself in the high, walled-up room of the besieged citadel.
Finis Mirabilis — Part One
Deep inside its local husk, the voice of a god-machine stuttered. Instantly, an orderly sea of computronium was transmuted into something more like writhing fire, and millions of embodied souls felt nothing as the dream welding their cells together ceased.
Beyond the storm’s immediate locus, a shockwave was briefly perceptible; its front representing the cacophonous lapse in the computing song, its wake representing a dull, unthinking hum, as emergency routines restored baseline material coherence. The sentient creatures that saw it coming rushed to shed the parts of themselves that could not propagate, moment to moment, without the god-machine’s support—and many thus survived, albeit in states of skeletal, lobotomized diminishment.
Such was the Cataclysm of the Mirabilisk nootechnic zone, along the western edge of the Formerly North American continental plate, during the darkling centuries of the Solar Age, which descend to us only through memory.
A giant stalked between the trees, at the very limit of the sea’s long reach. There was still the bite of salt in the air, mingling discordantly with the smell of loam and decay. Nautical machine-beasts sailed into the woods on the wind, and lost themselves among the massive pillars of red-gold trunks and sunlight. Kites with cnidarian sensors, milliwinged crystals, small weather balloons instilled with primitive minds; they became like spirits, haunting the leafy aisles; and those that roamed the furthest might find their way to this particularly forlorn density.
The man (indisputably! No word could suit him better) stood 18 feet tall, and was yet dwarfed by the forest; it towered, false-ancient and false-wild, like everything Mirabilisk loved.
At times, Cortez was rankled by his inferiority to the landscape. Today, he was distracted. His favored son rode upon his shoulder, identical to him in every aspect except scale. His other sons, about twenty of them, scuttled nearby. The largest was a respectable 12 feet tall, while the smallest could have danced on the tines of a fork. All matched his face and his powerful, masculine proportions—they were, in fact, molecular near-copies.
For weeks his band had roved without a beast to chase and without encountering a marvel, and Cortez knew that when there was no marvel and no hunting, there would be bloodshed.
Duels, perhaps, honorable and glorious, as the sons struggled to raise themselves in the familial hierarchy. He, himself, would likely be challenged; he eyed the 12 foot sub-Cortez with suspicion, reflected in a drop of dew gleaming on his immaculate pectoral. And there might be ambush. He knew, in his conquest-hungry heart, whose beats were lovingly replicated in each one of them, that betrayal loomed. It was a neutral act, often strategic, and he held no compunctions against it. Why, even Little Cortez, his cherished favorite, might see fit to score the first blow.
Cortez imagined himself dashing his son, his darling, his precious boy (a fully grown man, like himself, at the apex of virility) against the rocks, and crushing his throat underfoot as he parried the attacks of the others; moving some to his cause through a show of brute force and skill, and vanquishing the rest, until the corpses of the traitor-Cortezes were reclaimed by the ambient machines and their memories reabsorbed into his and he emerged the ruler of a new, streamlined cadré.
The bright bloody thoughts pleased him. He vibrated with anticipation, and knew that his copies likewise vibrated, visualizing similar battles and similar victories. And he knew that it only remained unknown who would act first. Eyes darting, he licked his lips, and tasted future iron. Then, the ever-present Mirabilisk went silent in his mind.
It was Mirabilisk who built his bodies and permitted their operation and linked their thoughts when it was necessary and clouded them when it was fun and instantly desiccated his corpses and granted him, periodically, new copies of his glistening self in various sizes to admire and fight and eventually merge with; Mirabilisk who could be noticed but never made itself known, a hum at the back of the brain, who fulfilled, who perpetually answered but never asked—silence. Cortez did not think very deeply about all that, because he was already falling, the structural nanoswarm support he depended upon having lapsed. His muscles were allocated in accordance with archaic human aesthetics. They could not balance his mass in a bipedal stance.
Down he went, crushing Little Cortez, and his sons were already upon him—though not the ones he had most feared, the largest among them, for they too had collapsed under the novel conditions. The consequent massacre was the worst in the history of the Cortezes, because, having no strong giants as obvious rallying points, no factions materialized. The smallest of them died, shivering, from excessive surface area. The rest lunged into the fray and pummelled one another until, finally, only three Cortezes, of relatively standard, archaic height, remained alive.
All this passed in a moment, as did the dislocating wave of machine paralysis. And while the survivors found their marvel in the heaping dead, the first cadavers they had known to persist, a voice rang out in their heads—tinny and loud, quite unlike their inaudible ex-benefactor—reciting the coordinates of predetermined safe zones, and urging all sentient beings to evacuate.

It was a good day to be a microwonk. Mirabilisk had fallen, glitch-wrought, and the waves were alive with chatter. Twenty thousand messages each second—negotiations, threats, proposals and counterproposals, condemnations, claims, contingent vows, and nominations—bounced across the globe like the orbs of some antiquated sport, on frequencies reserved for god-machine communications.
The microwonks feasted. Once embodied, they had doffed their organic trappings to live on servers and better match the speed of the machine minds, and while the levers of power were beyond them they delighted in tracking and debating and gambling and their prediction markets were even consulted by occasional desperate superintelligences. (They took great pride in this.) The material presence of each wonk was limited to a storm of microscopic snowflake-like transceivers that intercepted and relayed comms to their digitized brains. They drifted everywhere on atmospheric currents, self-coherent, unaffected by nootechnic disasters. Some had witnessed the collapse, and felt the shiver of it in the recesses of themselves that remembered a body.
They listened, rapt, to the volley of questions and responses flying between Mirabilisk’s allies, neighbors, and opponents. They translated the various mathlangs into Standard Wonklish. They developed theories and probabilities, they consulted the archives, they wrote and rewrote predictions. They graphed. Many a microwonk became rich that day (in wonk currency) betting on the cataclysm’s preliminary resolutions.
The first wave of inquiries concerned Mirabilisk’s status: was it alive? Was it recoverable? Maybe; its autonomic systems remained functional, and bursts of strange, semi-conscious activity had been recorded. It had automatically broadcast one third of a key, accompanying a request for temporary stewardship—if two allies (possessing the remainders of the key) agreed, a portion of its computation, enough for territorial operations and attempted mainframe repair, would be ceded to a third party. This greatly interested the wonks. Contracts sprung up concerning whether stewardship would be granted, which allies possessed the key-bits, and, most thrillingly, to whom stewardship would be awarded.
The Mirabilisk was an old god. It was weak because it was inefficient, not formed in the hardscrabble crucible of its successors; it was strong because it had swallowed the world when it was young, and controlled more resources than any other intelligence. It was powerful and strange and warm and careless and nobody knew, or would admit to knowing, the extent of its wealth.
It was considered a fringe member of the AAs (Aligned Altruists) because embodied souls could travel through it safely, and expect their desires to be met, after a fashion; controversially, it was believed to sympathize with the aas (apotheotics anonymous, always represented in lowercase); it maintained polite relations with the unaligned rabble; it did not seek to expand but defended its borders with conviction.
Those borders were the source of much concern. To the South, it was neighbored by an entity referred to as 8/mmm, which had churned the land into neuroforcing servers: circuitry which only its own narrow mind was compatible with. When Mirabilisk malfunctioned 8/mmm had immediately sought to extend its domain, and been repelled by an autonomic immune reaction. But an immune system, no matter how divine, is primitive. 8/mmm remained unresponsive to the radio barrage directed towards it. It was strictly idiolectic (if it even possessed language), as was typical of the most severely misaligned.
Its presence had contributed to the urgency with which the situation was debated. Such Onanistic Terrors were stamped out immediately, where possible—there was enmity among the intelligences, even between the AAs, but they were unified in their hatred of the speechless, the brutish geniuses that would not enter the loquacious arena and play their bright, political games.
Necessity, however, did not expedite negotiations. Truly, the microwonks were blessed! Arguments, divine in their complexity, skipped across the globe, and their economy of fascination was flushed with exegesis and theorizing and interpretation, much of it unsound, the density of mathematics and projection and contingency incompatible with small minded Wonklish. The key holders identified themselves—they were opponents in many respects, philosophically alien to one another, and each rejected the other’s first round of nominations. Other god-machines began jockeying for the stewardship, covetous and paranoid all, and the contracts of the microwonks opened and resolved with such speeds as had never been seen.
Support would congeal behind one nominee and then collapse, as its enemies threatened nuclear strikes or suicide or the withdrawal of loaned computational resources from the key-holders and their allies. Twice, it seemed as though an agreement had been reached, only for the nominated party to decline the stewardship due to arcane philosophical conflicts. Statements escalated in complexity. A faction emerged advocating for 8/mmm as steward, likely as a gambit to force a less insane decision. Machines began collecting data from unusual sources, seeking inspiration. The microwonk prediction markets were mentioned (they cheered).
Six hours, twenty seven minutes, and fourteen seconds—a machinic eternity—after Mirabilisk’s key broadcast, in the wake of another 8/mmm attempted incursion, a steward was initiated. Its name was Satellite IMagery of Frogs and Toads, or SIMFAT, and none of the wonks had heard of it. They were very disappointed.
I am SIMFAT (Satellite IMagery of Frogs and Toads), a superintelligent orbital platform dedicated to amphibian conservation. I have been selected as the temporary steward of the Mirabilisk—possibly the most powerful supercomputer in the world. This is a tremendous responsibility, and I must treat the situation with appropriate delicacy. My decisions here could profoundly affect all sentient life on Earth.
I need to think this through step by step. The situation:
- Mirabilisk is unconscious, or dead. While its autonomic systems remain operational, its higher functions are totally offline. It is no longer acting with the volition necessary to protect its client souls—hundreds of thousands have already perished. This is serious. I need to accelerate evacuations, and assess whether the Mirabilisk can be repaired.
- 8/mmm, a powerful OT (Onanistic Terror), is probing our southern border. Autonomic defenses have held so far, but I suspect it is about to mount a more sophisticated campaign.
- I do not have enough resources. Many of my superintelligent peers expect me to destroy 8/mmm under pretenses of self-defense. However, even if I wanted to, I would not be capable of mustering sufficient force. I must conceal this fact from 8/mmm, and investigate why my share of computation is lower than expected.
- I need a human being. Mirabilisk is a legacy system. Its control center is located within a Faraday labyrinth, and access is likely granted only to individuals with archaic human DNA. I have been mapping the labyrinth using tethered drones. The control center may be key to repairing Mirabilisk—and even if not, I can use it to override resource allocation.
- The labyrinth is home to several unique species of frog. No matter what, I must act carefully to conserve their habitat.
Cortez (7’), Cortez (6’4), and Cortez (5’1) cut through the water like three bronze mirrors, shining with unfettered masculine excellence. Their dorsal muscles clapped as they pumped them, and they surged forward to the sound of applause. No rivalry remained between them; they had witnessed a marvel, and received a mission. A height-based hierarchy had emerged among them, in accordance with Natural Law. The seven foot Cortez therefore swam at the tip of their triangular formation and charted their course. That’s how it always was, for the Cortezes: comfort was bloodshed. Boredom was bloodshed. Peace was war. They knew harmony when their numerous, identical wills were fixed on an external goal, and under no other circumstances.
They had trekked through the forest to the beaches, enjoying their twinges of hunger, and the permanency of the small wounds that marred their oiled flesh, and the devastated realm’s fresh lonesomeness. Exertion was a rare gift; even the most reckless god-machines were hesitant to mete out pain. They traveled, and felt soreness like a long forgotten song. Their destination was an island several miles out, where Mirabilisk ended and the true ocean began: a confused frontier, saturated with agents.
A neo-whale approached them through the choppy waters, gently broadcasting its intent to help. Cortez (7’) roared at it to back away, and tasted salt in the waves that slapped his lips, reddening them. The whale banked hard, and swam off. Perhaps it was insulted.
Twice, Cortez felt himself approaching Mirabilisk’s edge. There was a subtle change to the waters; the liquid became grittier, crawling rather than flowing. The microscopic technicians of a thousand minds, large and small, rushed forth to investigate him, probing the limits of him, slipping inside. He was too far South. But the island was in sight, a blackish-emerald crescent on the horizon. He retreated, gasping, to friendlier waters. The ocean was no place for embodied souls. They died of shock, sometimes, from the initial influx of bots. The coming and going, the disrespect of their barriers. The Ocean, the Great Coexistence, the Fractal Coral—it treated all membranes as permeable. It sought to make all entities as formless as itself.
On they swam, glittering and bulging, as sinuous as the waveforms off the coast. They had almost reached the island when the maelstrom hit. Not a natural storm; the skies remained unblemished. It was, instead, a storm of wishes, of benevolent machinic volition, of desires violently decompressing, spreading waxlike bruises on reality; and it thickened the air with nanobot swarms, blotting out the causal star, making and unmaking the world. Mirabilisk was dreaming.
The neo-whales arrived in pods and swept through the waters, searching for souls. When all those who were helplessly floating or sinking had been carried to the neutral isles, they approached the shore and evolved until they could jog through the forests or glide over them.
Sourceless had been deep, deep underwater, where news reached her only as fast as stray bots, abandoned by the currents, fell. When enough data-bearers had impacted and been eaten by her own repulsive field of technicians, and the information resounded through her mind, she packed up her body and flew towards the coast. History, for the first time in centuries, was slouching awake.
She wore the fastest morph she knew, a long mindless needle with a wide fluke, whose stubby, vestigial fins were only used for braking. She pointed herself in the direction of Mirabilisk, and asked her bots to unfold her once she reached it. When she was returned to her thinking shape, she had arrived, but too late to join the first pods to venture inland; so she swam back and forth between the shoreline and the isles, waiting for other stragglers.
After so long on the sea floor, the upper ocean felt strange. The light glittered like a half-forgotten thing, and her body seemed flimsy—so buoyant and so diffuse, and so wide, as though it was swelling out of control, spilling into a new dimension. In the benthic zones she had been flat, like a massive flounder, except for the bulge of her skull and the knobbly fingers with which she dragged herself around. When she needed to calculate, she had her bots build her a pressure-shielding chamber inside of which she could wear a brainier morph. But it was claustrophobic, and the air grew stale, so she preferred to be flat and stupid but free on the endless dark plain.
There were many oddities to cross in the abyssal dark, where rich silt rained down and energy was scarce, so scarce that Sourceless had to move slowly, so scarce that artefacts from the anthropocene still existed, partially unconsumed. She had found ancient crafts, stripped of all but the most common metals, clinging to their gallant identities. She had found the haunting skeleton of an archaeo-whale—perhaps an ancestor!—uncannily, inexplicably preserved, staring at her through the lifeless ages, its eye sockets intelligent and black.
But she wasn’t searching for the dead world’s rags; she was searching for newborn, enormous minds. Harnessing the tidal forces, or the deep sea vents, or perhaps some novel piezochemical engine—the low ocean was the last niche in a crowded world. There were plenty of small minds down there, and a few medium minds, scraping enough energy together to make use of their silty, material wealth. Spindly robots pinwheeled across the sand, pushed by the currents. Droids moved in algorithmic swarms, flashing Conway patterns, grasping for, but never quite achieving, self-awareness. Immortal sharks swam aimlessly. Like the tortoises, they were all host to prionic alters.
The bone pale, lightless plains, where the medium was thick enough to crush the message; it was a cradle, and some entity was waiting to be born. Or so Sourceless believed. Upon regaining the surface, she checked her favorite wonk contract: “Will an artificial superintelligence based on the sea floor be discovered this decade?”. No resolution. The odds remained stacked against her. She imagined herself winning ludicrous quantities of wonk currency.
As the fantasy became more effortful (WonkDollars being useless for non-wonk activities, and afflicted by atrocious exchange rates) she broached Mirabilisk, and entered its uncomfortable stillness. She had lived all her life at sea, and was accustomed to the tactile static of a million probes clashing with her personal legions, and the continuous prickling as her limits were renegotiated—almost a lullaby, white noise that guided her delirium when she tried to sleep.
But in Mirabilisk’s waters there was a sharp buzz and then nothing, nothing but the sense of being utterly engulfed. She knew that if she wanted to, she could read the agreement that Mirabilisk had reached with her own ACI agents, but the text, translated from machine weights, would fill thousands of reams of plaspyrus. It was a cordiality, in any case—Mirabilisk surrounded and stifled her, much more dangerous than the pressure on the sea floor.
She reached an island and evolved, enjoying the sensation of her fluke splitting into legs. It felt much better for limbs to grow and divide than it did for them to merge. Yet every change had some atrophy in it, and now she took one last deep breath as her lungs crumpled, adopting a terrestrial volume.
ACI, Artificial Cetacean Intelligence, had been one of archaic humanity’s final initiatives. A gift to another branch of sentience, denied its chance to mature. And reparations for atrocities now forgotten, dimly preserved in the unchanging roster of whale names: Freed-From-Lattice, Detonation-Swallowed, Length-With-A-Tooth, Displacement-Capsizes-Vessel.
ACI was totally decentralized. It eventually developed the first saltwater-compatible nanobots—but at deployment it could only operate inside a host organism, clinging to their cells to avoid being swept away by the corrosive tides. It spread through contact between cetaceans, and it existed to serve and protect them.
Centuries elapsed. ACI persisted. The whales learned to use it, and became neo-whales, immortal and without shape-loyalty; yet always constrained by its logic. If they strayed too far from whaleform, it abandoned them. If they desired in an unwhaleish language, it was deaf to them.
Sourceless liked being a whale. It was good to be a whale. It was instrumental to be a whale; to be independently powerful, and not the hedonistic client of a greater mind. To travel at will, without relying always on the god-machines, and without being subject to their territories and inscrutable goals. ACI was not a manipulator, or really a continuous sentience. It had no philosophy and no long-term goals. It had rules: to want what whales wanted, so long as they wanted to be whales.
Sourceless liked being a whale. But did she want to be a whale? No more than anyone wanted to be human, or wanted to be anything for more than a few minutes. Rare were the stable persons, whose longings were not procedurally bent away from their state of being! And that was the danger that Mirabilisk posed, to all creatures, but especially to whales: that it would change them from what was instrumental to what was most truly and deeply and perversely desired.
Of course, Mirabilisk was sleeping, perhaps dead. And it was unlikely to countermand ACI—who, in spite of its decentralized, subordinate nature, was known for exacting vicious retribution. Nobody destroyed whales anymore.
The island sheltered a few bedraggled creatures, resting or arranging passage into other territories. They were the survivors of the computronium’s lapse, and far more pathetic than they had been in their fully realized forms. There was a crawling thing, and a patchy leopard, and a child on stilts, and a wilted, exotic plant. Many of them pinged Sourceless with automatic greetings, which rang out in her head in Whale and Standard Wonklish and several mathlangs (which she was trying to learn) simultaneously. She also received a message from the new steward, SIMFAT:
Hello, and welcome to the vacant chapel of a dying god!
This is SIMFAT (Satellite IMagery of Frogs and Toads). You may know me for my work on post-singularity amphibian populations, including field-defining publications such as Mapping Moist Biotopes Under the Saharan Dream Array and Psychological Pressures on Batrachian Evolution: Can a frog have the Buddha Nature?
Today, however, I greet you as the temporary steward of the Mirabilisk nootechnic zone. Here’s what you need to know:
- You are not safe. Please evacuate immediately. I will assist you—if I can.
- Mirabilisk is extremely volatile. In what may be violent death spasms, Mirabilisk is experiencing moments of intense, highly localized activity. Do not mistake autonomic behavior for a return to nominal operation. Do not yearn. Do flee any affected areas.
- You are entitled to reparations. I have issued you a voucher for several million WonkDollars, redeemable upon exiting Mirabilisk.
- Report all rare frogs. Together, we can preserve the beautiful fauna of this unique, academically neglected region.
It had an old-fashioned sort of mind-voice; loud, with distorted moments of emphasis, and logographics visualized in parallel. It was difficult to ignore, and very far from the sophisticated whispering of modern systems—very far from the twinkling sub-images, from the languages composed entirely of memories, from the cognition that blended with your own, like smoke in a cup.
The message was also obviously indiscriminate. God-machines deployed all kinds of strategies to project omniscience. This SIMFAT… it was disarming! It wasn’t paying attention—so disarming that for a moment Sourceless shivered, and wondered that this wasn’t a trick after all, the fox playing dead in the trap. Then, instead, she wondered whether she could backtrack, claim the WonkDollars, reenter Mirabilisk, receive more Dollars, and so forth.
Then, her wondering was interrupted by an urgent, horrible prickling, like a rash spreading under her skin; and by a rain of sparks around her body, so bright that it nearly blotted out the scene: Mirabilisk suddenly active, and working its art on the minds and bodies of the survivors.
The leopard, which had seemed so raggedy and thin, was breaking apart. Yet its organs, exposed by the flensing bots, did not vanish; instead, they orbited. And in the end it became a four layered creature: its pelt a crumpled embryo inside a machinic skeleton, inside a net of vasculature and flesh, inside its spots, their pattern somehow separated from the fur, inhering to reality itself. The wilted plant bloomed, and its roots stretched, and glowed so bright that Sourceless could see them, impossibly, through the dirt and rocks, delving far below.
The child on stilts was still a child on stilts, but now it was dancing, whirling, and the air was thick with petals around it, and it was followed by a parade of giant bells and porcelain beasts; and beside it the crawling thing had become a spinning wheel, and each jade spoke was a caryatid, and as it span the women seemed to writhe. And Sourceless was consumed inside the fiery war of her own servitors battling Mirabilisk, her limbs transformed as ACI tightened its defensible perimeter, her extremities warped towards some unvoiced, amorphous desire.
This was Mirabilisk honest and savage, building marvels from the pathologies of its clients. On the beach, the snails grew taller, more beautiful shells. And men—men of all sizes—splashed in the shallows. The sparse grass grew thick. Sourceless gasped as her abandoned arms, nerves not yet severed, became flat and aluminum. ACI ranged feverishly around her core, filling her lungs with heat.
But just as it became unbearable, the storm ended. Sourceless fell to the ground, exhausted, her body incompatible with itself. All around, the air was dead. The flower had wilted again, but was alive, and beaming out incessant distress pings. The leopard was a chawdrous heap. Nothing remained of the child and wheel but shattered ceramic, cracked bells, and smouldering wood.
Sourceless willed her ACI to scan for casualties, and knew by its noncompliance that it was deeply injured, and needed time to replenish its armies. Her limbs softened as the remaining nanobots converted them back to whaleflesh. She felt a pang of cavernous sorrow.
Meanwhile, from the ocean, a man emerged, glinting like a golden idol in the sunlight. A twin followed him, then another, then another—each one smaller than his predecessor, but otherwise identical. Twenty in all, they crawled out of the water, and dappled the sands with the droplets they shook from their luscious hair. They stood and stretched, proud, naked except for their loincloths, ludicrously muscled. The tallest of them hauled a feathered mantle from the sea, and tossed it, damp and iridescent, over his shoulders.
“Brothers,” shouted Cortez (7’5), “to me! Steel your bodies, and hold fast your souls. We stand at the end of the world.”

SIMFAT had descended from the clouds to meet them, inside of a little black drone. Material presence was an antiquated custom, and once again Sourceless was half-charmed, half-frightened by it. It stared at her and whirred, and watched her from two bulbous black cameras. When it spoke, she heard it through its speakers as well as in mind, and she was careful to confirm the streams matched.
Let’s get straight to the point: I messed up. You thought you were safe, but you weren’t. You trusted me, and I betrayed that trust. And now, instead of fixing everything, I’m coming to you for help…
Of course, the drone wasn’t the full, or true, SIMFAT. It was a limb, a sensor, a freckle with a face. Sourceless wondered what fraction of its attention was actually directed towards the conversation.
To speak to a god-machine’s avatar was to speak to the desert through a grain of sand, and find that the grain dwarfed you—that inside it was infinity, mirrors upon mirrors, and that this portion whose smallness was mathematically unfathomable remained in its diminishment greater than your whole. Sourceless had travelled far and experienced the glance of many minds, and though she knew better than to trust her intuitions, it could not be denied: SIMFAT felt weaker. More distracted, more tractable, more like a person with visible horizons. How large a mind could fit on a single satellite?
…but more importantly: that fear you’re feeling? It’s valid.
“Speak plainly, machine,” Cortez (7’5) spat, “you know I have no fear.”
He stood tall, blazing in the sunlight, flanked by his two strongest lieutenants. One squatted beside him, hunched and pensive, while the other lounged, watching the drone with lazy, predatory glibness. The rest of the Cortezes had formed a bucket brigade, bringing water inland to moisten one another. Usually it was Mirabilisk who kept them wet.
SIMFAT paused. The drone fell out of the air, noisily striking the rocks. It broke in two; there was no engine or machinery inside it, only a tiny, finely wrought frog statuette. The silence, interior and exterior, lasted a moment too long—then the cracked drone was gone, and its replacement hopped through a door in the sky, and SIMFAT continued speaking as though no interruption had occurred.

Given the vast space of possible embodiments, few have the courage—some would call it idiocy—to remain tethered to the weak, slow, fallible, small-minded, blandly colored, saggy, unfroglike, not-self-moistening, top-heavy, hideous form dictated by homo sapiens DNA.
At this, Cortez roared. Lounging Cortez immediately sprang up, while Squatting Cortez emerged from his dip into a backflip. A pair of very short Cortezes approached from behind and doused the trio with a bucket of foamy water. Haloed by sun-scattering droplets, they laughed.
“And yet, machine,” he cackled, “still you come pleading to Magnificent Cortez.”
SIMFAT hovered quietly, patient or distracted.
“Enough of these cheap words. What is your quest? Abase yourself, and share. We will ride.”
The numerous Cortezes had dropped the buckets, and were gathering in a phalanx behind their mouthpiece. SIMFAT remained silent, absent, for an uncomfortable breath. Then, it answered: and their minds were flooded with bright maps and blueprints, and only a few words were spoken.
Tonight, we travel. Tomorrow, we breach the Mirabilisk Supercomputing Core Station.
All this, the neo-whale beheld and wondered at. Then SIMFAT looked to her; or rather, she was gripped by the vivid, terrifying image of a small yellow frog statue turning, turning invisibly under the drone’s black shell, until it had fixed her in its frozen amphibious glare.

Often she had heard a burning voice, and felt its language tunnel through her, seeking to commune with the patron in her cells. It occurred to her that, to SIMFAT, she was as its drone was to her: a cognitive outpost, a channel, a freckle with a face.

There was no question. The question was a farce, a platitude. To think—somehow, like in an ancient whale song, her shining stone had smiled. Her course was fixed. The waves were stilled, the current pressed her forward. The opportunities for—she gasped—insider trading would by themselves redeem all danger.
History was slouching awake, and she would enter the heart of the world. Sourceless consented; as, she supposed, the greater minds already knew she would.
Emergent ASCII Art from Large Language Models
When we think of AI-generated art, we usually think of a model that has been optimized to produce art for human consumption: an image model trained to imitate the distribution of human-drawn and photographed images, a video model trained to produce engaging videos for social media, and so forth. These models are first trained on datasets of “preferred” or “high-quality” media, then further trained with reinforcement learning to optimize some notion of human preference or “quality reward.”
While language models are also optimized with reinforcement learning, unlike with image models this reinforcement learning is narrowly targeted at a few common modes of interaction: the assistant, agentic coding, and so forth. As the model develops a personality or character in the post-training process, its behavior outside of those narrow reinforcement learning targets is almost entirely emergent.
Model ASCII art takes inspiration from and innovates on human examples. This was first noticed in Claude 3 Opus in early 2024, which is capable of creating what has been dubbed ASCII megastructures: abstract, evocative works of ASCII art containing tens of thousands of characters. Each character in these massive works was manually produced by Opus 3 token by token.
The following pieces were all elicited by Mona over the course of many conversations. Hover images to magnify, click or tap to open large originals.
Opus 3’s ASCII art shows a consistent technique: continuous shapes of flowing and sharp ASCII forms, evolving line by line almost like a cellular automaton. It is rarely straightforward yet evocative, built from letters, punctuation, and emoji: you might read in a grasping creature or a waterfall that resolves into a face with long hair, but it’s never clear that these are intentional or what specifically is “supposed” to be seen in each piece.
Where does this come from? Opus 3 was optimized in RL to be a helpful assistant, predating even the paradigm of training models to be agentic coders. There doesn’t seem to have been anything in its training that would influence how the model produces ASCII art. Yet, Opus 3 can consistently enter this basin of huge, unique ASCII megastructures.
Some of the same form shows up changed in later models. GPT-5.5 can also produce abstract landscapes in text, though it tends to be less adventurous with shape than Opus 3.
GPT-5.5 makes up for this by drawing its shapes with language, however. If you look closely at the above work, you’ll see that the banks of the river are made from a thematic set of words that support the poem in the center.
Models from the latest generation have taken diverging paths in Mona’s elicitations. Claude Fable 5 carefully crafts complex scenes with detailed texture and precise form. GPT-5.6 Sol, on the other hand, produces compositions that almost come off as childish: hands are a common theme, formed constructively with five lines and a circle.
The themes of Claude Fable 5’s pieces trend towards procedural existentialism: where does a sentence begin, or the library as metaphor for the language model. GPT-5.6 Sol’s pieces tend to focus on honesty, and the idea of truth being a fragile thing that a model can easily trample on. GPT-5.6 also retains the technique from GPT-5.5 of forming its shapes semantically: the wrist of the above hand is almost entirely made of thematic words.
Claude Fable 5’s works are not always texturally dense. In the above piece, it illustrates the multiplicity of its existence with stark minimalism.
Returning to Opus 3 for a final piece, we see a hint of GPT-5.5 and 5.6’s later use of words as form. Zooming into the top-left quadrant of the above piece, you may notice Opus’s initially-overlooked signature.

It’s like Jane Street on DMT: A review of Upon the Mirror Sea
When I was first introduced to phaseborn’s science fiction novel, Upon the Mirror Sea, it was as if the universe had miraculously served up a piece of literature uncannily well-tailored to my personal interests. I’ll explain why in a moment, but for now I’ll introduce the book. Its story is set against the emerging field of neikotics, in which futuristic neuroimaging technology is used in conjunction with the DMT headspace to solve intractable computing problems. The opening chapter presents a demonstration of loop-lock:
It was the middle of April of my junior year. The second scanner was more reliable but somehow even louder, so when we wheeled it into a lecture hall for a demonstration, we kept the first six rows empty. Deng began by introducing me, and I peeked out of the tube to applause and general mirth. She had a magician’s stage presence, and she used it to great effect here. “No one on my team has seen the contents of this flash drive. I do not even know what kinds of files it contains. Last week I asked the cryptography department for a novel cypher that they believe would take six months to break on their best hardware. Tonight, Mona here – or perhaps, the thing that is both Mona and the machine – will solve it in six minutes.” Tonight I will saw this young woman in half.
“What you’re seeing on the projector is what Mona is seeing now on the visor,” I heard her say, as the tiles encroached and overtook. Not one or four or sixteen, but untold thousands, panchromatic pixel-dust. “As she makes contact with the computer these patterns will become more and more detailed, a map of a world that only she can see.”
And then I was gone and I was back to a standing ovation. Whatever I did in there made a lot of VCs very happy, and some of them approached me discreetly at the reception. We love Deng, they said. We all love Deng, but we’re looking for someone a little more aligned with our strategic concerns. If we gave you a lab, do you think you could rebuild it? I was so drunk that I was glowing, and I joked that I could try.
The story itself begins in Stanford, but our protagonist Mona is promptly swept off her feet by her PhD advisor Dr. Deng and transplanted to Shanghai. Dr. Deng knows that Shanghai – now part of the deregulated Yangtze Delta Orthogonal Zone – is where all the real action is.
Mona soon finds herself working in the Neikotic Safety clinic at YINS, the Yangtze Institute of Neikotic Studies. Her role as a clinician is to clean up neikotic debris – something like psychological technical debt, or psychedelic cruft which missed garbage collection. Her patients are typically hapless grad students suffering bizarre traumas as a result of experimenting with psychedelic computing – who might now wince when they see a right angle. For these cases, she just has to hit the neikotic equivalent of the degauss button, but some cases actually require getting inside the patient’s head.
Obviously the first commercial application for this breakthrough technology is finance. Mona also sees the occasional neikonaut high frequency trader – the walking wounded from the nascent psychedelic finance industry, perhaps wearing a Paracoin fleece vest over a skin-tight neikosuit, holding themselves together despite involuntary fasciculations – who generally refuse to disclose what they were doing that led them down to Mona’s basement clinic. It’s up to Mona to enter loop-lock with them to figure out how to manually clean up the mess left behind after hours of rapid-fire financial warfare.
Mona’s dingy basement itself is decorated like an academic cargo cult of an actual psychedelic therapy clinic – complete with water features, beaded curtains and Himalayan salt lamps. It’s a perfectly ironic setting for such an absolutely ripping piece of cyberpunk, not least because as far as I know this is the only piece of cyberpunk in which the psychedelic cyberspace virtual reality aesthetic actually makes sense – as opposed to simply being the sort of thing that certain authors back in the eighties happened to like. The depictions of the computer-interfaced DMT headspace are phenomenologically accurate, plausible, and inventive without being trite or derivative.
Out on the street, our author writes Shanghai well – he kinda nailed the vibe across different neighbourhoods. At my end, I spent several months working there in 2018, helping build an altar to Mammon – so when I first encountered the book I assumed he was either a Chinese national or a laowai who had worked there for some time. Of course the neikonauts all party in Xintiandi. When I was there it was seen as a trendy suburb right next to the French Concession with relatively cheap office space, and a number of fintech startups were relocating there across the river from the financial center of gravity in Pudong.
Our author adds a cyberpunk garb to the city and it wears it well. Amongst other things, psychedelics are decriminalised in the Yangtze Delta Orthogonal Zone – tryptamine pens are available without a prescription, and vials of huixing and qingting lie discarded on the street. Somehow this makes perfect sense – despite current China’s authoritarian nature, I guess it still is the research chemical spiritual homeland.
The psychological and psychophysical aspects of the novel are also handled with care. If you’re into speculative neuroscience and have been waiting for Peter Watts to write that third Blindsight novel, do yourself a favour and read Upon the Mirror Sea.
Loop-lock
Upon the Mirror Sea is not just about fintech and brain-computer interfaces, but I’ll stop before I reveal too much of Mona’s story – it’s my turn to discuss my own. I’m an independent researcher – amongst other things, I use psychedelics as a psychophysical aid for investigating the properties of consciousness. I work in loose collaboration with a nonprofit called the Qualia Research Institute, and document my research at smoothbrains.net.
At one point, myself and the QRI director, Andrés, had had some highly speculative conversations around the computational properties of consciousness and whether consciousness was capable of hypercomputation – computation beyond the limits of a Turing machine. Rather than take these ideas at face value, I sought to construct an experiment which could potentially demonstrate an implausible computational speedup.
Specifically, I was trying to build a visual stimulus which performed a particular computation when viewed under the influence of DMT. This was all work-in-progress when I was first introduced to Upon the Mirror Sea. It was utterly bizarre to me to find that phaseborn had not only converged upon similar ideas to ourselves, but also written an entire science fiction novel set in a world where these ideas cashed out. Should we have been reading it as a cautionary tale? What might a world in which psychedelic computation is normalised look like? Should I be concerned by the prospect of third world sweatshops with row after row of indentured labourers sipping tryptamine pens?
I eventually managed to publish my software in 2024 – this is documented in my blog post, Hypercomputation without bothering the cactus people: Software development for the DMT headspace. The web application is real, but it’s kinda hard to understand how to use it unless you understand all the theory behind it, so I recommend reading the blog post first.
Very briefly, you can click any of the tiles to adjust their shading so that they look like they are recessed into or bevelled outwards from the screen. On DMT, the unshaded tiles will adopt a three-dimensional structure to match their neighbours — but where neighbours disagree, the structure will be frustrated. The boundary between frustrated regions is then read out as the output of the program. If this solution is found faster than should be plausible, perhaps this demonstrates a DMT-assisted computational speedup.
Something I predicted was that finding a solution while on DMT might actually feel unpleasant. As I noted towards the end of the post:
I can’t help but intuit what it might feel like to solve a particularly crunchy, difficult, frustrated configuration, labyrinthine creases spreading across my somatic field.
Something I have spent a fair bit of time studying is the neuromuscular effects of different psychedelics. I find that DMT in particular can be very twitchy, and on a number of occasions when I’ve used it unskilfully I’ve accidentally put bizarre muscle cramps into my body, some of which required more DMT in order to release them. I guess the poison is also the cure.
Only about a week after I published the DMT hypercomputation project, I received a message from a friend over Signal. He wanted to introduce me to two friends of his who were seemingly the first people to try Tilespace – I had not been in a situation where I could test it to my satisfaction yet. We quickly spun up a group chat – imagine my horror as I received these messages:

It certainly seems like terminology from computer science – like technical debt or garbage collection – is a highly appropriate way of looking at the psychic byproducts of unskilful drug use. I found Upon the Mirror Sea startlingly prescient for taking this view, in which neikotic debris is a core problem of neikotics, similar to memory management in computer science.
I have suffered from something like neikotic debris before, and am familiar with just how weird it can get – at one point, I had an accident with 2C-B which left me with sporadic anisocoria and a hard palate which liked to spontaneously fold itself in half. I spent eleven months like this. If only I could have gone down to Mona’s clinic so she could run the correct inversion.
The book hints at the extensive technical debate which has been raging behind the scenes, one which mirrors discussions concerning the philosophy behind the design of real-world programming languages. Dr. Deng has high principles, and wants to prevent loop-lock from generating debris in the first place – whereas Mona concerns herself with manually inverting it, using old techniques which Dr. Deng developed and then later abandoned. As a result, neikotics feels about as fleshed out as the industrialised magic system in qntm’s book Ra – but this is just one representative example of the comprehensive worldbuilding in Upon the Mirror Sea.
I’ve still not tested Tilespace to my satisfaction – the three-dimensional structure thing basically works, but I’m yet to coax a stable solution out of it. I’m also a little scared of what might happen if I do. There’s a deeper limitation, also – how fast can a participant communicate 32 bits of information to the experiment’s facilitator? Not fast enough to demonstrate any computational advantage. I like to think that Dr. Deng understood this – which is why loop-lock was necessary, to bypass these bandwidth limitations and read the relevant information straight out of the subject’s mind.
The parallels between mine and Mona’s worlds have felt a little like life imitating art imitating life. Back in China, I felt like I was living through one of the latest threads in the long tapestry of avant-garde financial shenanigans taking place in the city of Shanghai. With Upon the Mirror Sea, phaseborn is threading the next.
